Registered  Massage Therapy

The practice of massage therapy is the assessment of the soft tissue and joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissue and joints by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function or relieve pain.

Requirments and Education to become a Registered Massage Therapist

In order to become a registered massage therapist (RMT) , one must graduate from a recognized college with a 2200 hour course load. A RMT must then pass a written and clinical provincial examination. This allows a therapist to use the designation "Registered Massage Therapist"( RMT ) or "Massage Therapist"( MT ). These both mean the same thing and are restricted titles.

RMTs are governed by the Massage Therapy Act and the Regulated Health Professions Act ( same act that governs doctors, nurses, Phyisiotherapists, chiropractors, etc.).

All massage therapists must regularly acquire approved continuing education credits to ensure they remain up-to-date, and must also participate in quality assurance programs, which ensures high professional standards and quality client care.

For more information on massage therapy, go to the website of the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (our governing body) www.CMTO.com.
